HANDS-ON TYPE | typography event in Porto/Portugal | 14—17 September 2021
A series of workshops and conferences on the letterpress heritage, with three super-guests: Alan Kitching (UK) | The New Typography Workshop; Dafi Kühne (CH) | Babyinktwice; Rick Griffith (US) | Matter.
Alan Kitching (UK) | The New Typography Workshop — One of the world's leading typography and handprint designers (The New Typography Workshop), recognized for his expressive use of wood and metal types in the creation of his graphic works. He is an honorary member of The Royal College of Art, visiting professor at the University of the Arts London, and a member of the Alliance Graphique International.
Dafi Kühne (CH) | Babyinktwice — Designer, printer and professor, known for the wild mix of analogue and digital tools to produce posters for music, art and architecture, theatre, films and also products. He is the author of the publication True Pint (2016), the video series The Dafi Kühne Printing Show (2020) and the typographic project Wood Type Now! (2009).
Rick Griffith (US) | Matter — Designer, visual artist, printer, teacher, writer and activist. His creative practice results in a collage of form, color and grammar, with an autoethnographic focus. His works can be found all over the world, integrating museums and collections in the United States.

2. As part of her final project, Morgane Van Torre (FR) created a woodblock typeface in collaboration with Type High Design (UK). Megh contains 225 pieces including alternates, extension modules and ligatures.
3. 'About tyranny' is a book by historian Timothy Snyder. Inspired by Snyder's lessons, Brazilian designers created posters at Oficina Tipográfica São Paulo that represented the author's views and the views their own. The result was exposed at the National Conjunto in São Paulo - link

LUCA Summerschool - Open Call
LUCA School of Arts is proud to announce CRYING AT THE WORKSHOP, the first LUCA SUMMERSCHOOL in collaboration with RISO Benelux.
In two exclusive programs, selected artists and LUCA students explore the possibilities of risography together, under the guidance of internationally established artist collective Leo Gabin. For CRYING AT THE WORKSHOP 6 artists and 6 students will be selected, to enter into an intense collaboration to achieve an experimental end result using a Risograph printer. A publication? An installation? ... You fill it in as you go! Leo Gabin is your sparring partner for a week and LUCA provide technical and logistical support.
How can you apply?
You can register for the LUCA summerschool until June 18, 2021 until 11:59 pm.
• Send your artistic CV, 3 photos representative of your work and your motivation in 1 PDF file to riso@luca-arts.be with the file name; your firstname_name_and the mention for which program (Ghent or Brussels) you want to register. Only complete files are submitted to the selection committee. No later than 9 July 2021, you will be informed by email whether you are one of the 12 lucky participants!!
