Last Sunday the city of Gent, as well as other cities in Flanders and Brussels, was celebrating the Heritage day (Erfgoeddag) which is held annually on the first Sunday after the Easter Holidays. Each year a theme is chosen and this time it was all about rituals. The museums, archives, documentation centres, collecting libraries, local heritage centres and organisations dedicated to folk culture opened their doors to public (free entrance). Every year this results in a diverse selection of activities. And this year was not an exception.

Almost every printing & typecasting equipment at the printing department of the MIAT museum is frequently used: Heidelberg, Ludlow, Linotype, FAG and other proof presses, but the Monotype is one of a few we seldom see in action. But when a few weeks ago Patrick brought Ian Gabb, a British designer/printer to the MIAT to inspect the Monotype Super Caster we were sure they will make it work again.

On 21st of April typographer and researcher, Ann Bessemans (BE) will be giving a lecture about Matilda typeface at the MIAT museum. During her Ph.D. dissertation entitled “Type Design for Children with Low Vision”, under the supervision of Prof. Gerard Unger (Leiden University) and Prof. Dr. Bert Willems (Hasselt University), Bessemans was attempting to bridge the gap between font designers and cognitive scientists studying the legibility of letter characters. As the result of this Ph.D. project, she developed a font - Matilda, aiming to reduce reading problems of children with low vision. For the further development of this project, she was granted various international scholarships (Microsoft etc). Currently, Ann Bessemans is connected to MAD, Media Arts and Design-faculty in Hasselt as a teacher and researcher.

DADA ist 100
Marc Berger/ Edition Schwarzdruk (DE) is doing a great job organising the 'Dada ist 100’, an exhibition celebrating 100 years of Dada movement. More than 50 letterpress printers (and yours truly) from 10 countries will be taking part in this unique event and are currently working hard on their contributions.
The exhibition will take place in Gransee (DE) on 4th of June and will then be travelling to venues in Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium and the USA. There is a crowdfunding campaign just started to fund a catalogue for this touring exhibition, so feel free to take a look at it, support it, receive your rewards (some nice things out there!) and help it happen! Thanks!
