Letterpress learning programme 2023. Atelier t.

April 24, 2023

As the Easter holidays was approaching it was time for the second meet-up for our Meester-leerling project, led by Thomas Gravemaker with Niels Goovaerts and yours truly as exemplary students. This time our 3-day course took place at the Atelier t in Bierbeek. A newly built studio with 3 proofpresses and a large collection of metal and wood type seemed like a perfect playground for our next assignment: setting text. A long piece of text.

Back to school or letterpress learning programme 2023

February 23, 2023

As many of you might know, at the end of 2022, we (Niels Goovaerts from Atelier t and yours truly) got a scholarship from the Flemish government to enter into our own expert-level letterpress learning programme led by Thomas Gravemaker (Letterpress Amsterdam). The practical lessons will be taking place between the workshop at the Museum of Industry in Ghent and Atelier t in Bierbeek. With a 3-day course every two months, accompanied by assignments and reading.

Workshops at the Atelier t in Bierbeek (BE)

December 19, 2022

Atelier t is an artistic print studio in Bierbeek, near Leuven (Belgium). The studio was founded by Katleen Vereecken and Niels Goovaerts. In the spring of 2022, a new, spacious and well-equipped print studio was built. Three quality proofing presses are available, as well as an extensive collection of lead and wood type. A small library completes the set-up.

Atelier t is an open workspace for slow printing. You are most welcome for letterpress printing and other techniques. You can follow one of the workshops or come up with your own project, for which we offer tailor-made guidance.

Spring and summer 2023:

11 – 12 March 2023 — Introduction to Letterpress with Niels Goovaerts
01 – 02 April 2023 — Letterpress: The Young Ones with Niels Goovaerts
28 – 30 April 2023 — Meet the Artist: posters with Armina Ghazaryan (aka yours truly)
19 – 21 May 2023 — Poetry on the press with Thomas Gravemaker / Letterpress Amsterdam
10 – 14 July 2023 — Summer course with Thomas Gravemaker / Letterpress Amsterdam

We made it! Expert-level letterpress learning programme 2023

December 5, 2022

Too early for New Year's wishes, but time for champagne nonetheless. We got some great news last week. In 2023, we will receive a grant from the Flemish government to enter into our own expert-level letterpress learning programme, with Niels Goovaerts (Atelier t) and myself as students and the one-and-only Thomas Gravemaker (Letterpress Amsterdam) as maestro. The scholarship allows us to take the time to dive even deeper into the craft, drawing on all Thomas' knowledge and experience. It will be a combination of online sessions and intensive three-day weekends. It will be gruelling, with such an all-seeing master! 😉 Never thought we stood any chance, but never say never. We will be working in Atelier t and in the Museum of Industry in Ghent. Great chance to preserve the knowledge and pass it on. Keep an eye on this space.

Gentse Feesten 2022! Or poster, card and Late Donderdag.

August 24, 2022

hA! After a break of 2 years because of 'you-know-what' the Ghent Festivities (Gentse Feesten) were back in the city. Since their origin in 1843, the Ghent Festivities have developed into one of the largest cultural festivals in Europe. This ten days festival is both an urban festival, a cultural event and a large-scale popular feast.

Type walk in Ghent. Before & after. Marchandises & stories.

Tucked away near Sint-Jacobsplein in Ghent once stood a place that many locals still remember with a certain nostalgia: Marchand’10. The name Marchand’10 (Marchandise) — French for “merchant” — suited the place perfectly. This was never just a shop, but a world of its own. It felt more like wandering into a densely packed cabinet of curiosities.

Type walk in Ghent. Before & after or from lace to lunch: the changing story of Kraanlei 33.
January 6, 2026

It’s been quite a while since I started my Sunday type walks. What began as a simple stroll through the city—my only free day as a self-employed graphic designer—quickly became a way to move, clear my head, and indulge my long-standing fascination with typography in all its forms. Whenever I arrive in a new city, I instinctively take a type walk; the streets are full of hidden typographic gems, waiting to be discovered.

From 24 January to 23 February 2026, the participants of this year’s Long Live the Black Art programme will take over a small exhibition space at the Museum of Industry in Ghent.
They’ll be showing a mix of personal work and their final projects from the programme — not just polished prints, but also glimpses into how those prints came to be. Think process, materials, experiments, and the decisions made along the way.

Letterpret or Alphabet Cards

The wood-type collection at the Museum of Industry in Ghent is exceptional, and I’m lucky to work with it every day. Typesetting cards and posters, pulling prints in the museum’s workshop — even after all these years I’m still discovering new, curious, and beautifully worn pieces in the drawers.
