As the annual Museum Night in Gent was approaching and it became a good tradition among volunteers of the MIAT museum to have a demonstration and giveaway for the public, we (me & Marie-Alice Boshoff) decided to design & print a calendar for the occasion.
This year the Museum Night took place on 1st of December and the MIAT opened its doors till 01 o'clock inviting visitors to attend its new exhibition 'Made by Children. Child Labor Then and Now', music performance by Wannes Cappelle, various demonstration and the recently opened Bar Mitte.
After a few brainstorm sessions, research and adjustments to our plan due to the time restrictions, we decided to make something about Gent, something each visitor would recognize. The city of Gent has a reach, multifaceted history, and as it was not possible to fit its all highlights to one single page, we picked just a few elements to work with. So while I kept myself busy with the typography and the practical part of the work (makeready, printing etc), Marie-Alice came up with four wonderful linocuts of images referring to Gent and its history.
We decided to print 3 colours up front and the 4th colour was printed on the Museum Night evening itself, so the visitors could actually witness the printing process. At the end of the day more than 250 copies were given away to the public and as we run out of calendars we quickly made a new, simplified (one colour) version which was also gone by the end of the day:) Well, printing till 1 o'clock at night was quite fun, but tiring experience, so we cleaned up the presses and went for a drink.
