Letterpress Workshop at ATypI in Antwerp. 11.09.18

August 12, 2018

Don't miss the full day workshop 'Let your creativity run wild' with Thomas Gravemaker (Letterpress Amsterdam) and Armina Ghazaryan (aka yours truly & co-owner of Letterpress Corner) on the 11th of September in Antwerp at ATypI. The workshop will be taking place at the Letter-Kunde Press in Antwerp, run by Patrick Goossens.

Workshop - Let your creativity run wild.
Full-Day session - 9:30-5:30 - Letter-Kunde Press - maximum 6 participants.

A 6-hour workshop that explores the potential of letterpress to create vibrant prints with some twists and turns, taking place in the midst of one of the most important collections of objects related to the printing industry. Participants will be able to use the large collection of wood and metal type, to create an original poster.

Some letterpress experience is desirable. All materials provided.

Armina Ghazaryan is a freelance graphic designer and letterpress practitioner based in Ghent, Belgium. In 2008, she joined the printing team of MIAT (the Museum of Industry, Work and Textiles) in Ghent, where she designs and typesets posters using wood and metal type, and catalogs the museum’s wood-type collection. Her works are featured in various publications by Gestalten, Rockport, Rotovision, and BIS publishers. Armina co-founded the “Letterpress Corner” printmaking studio in Ghent, which has a primary focus on running letterpress workshops for groups and individuals looking to acquire a practical knowledge of the craft. www.letterpresscorner.com

Thomas Gravemaker has extensive experience in letterpress and graphic design, working in the UK and in France before setting up his own studio. His passion for letterpress began prior to his training at the Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and has developed over the years. Thomas has worked on private commissions, taught letterpress, and lectured and presented at various conferences and events. After several years spent in London, Paris, and Edinburgh, he returned to Amsterdam to refine and extend his craftsmanship in his workshop situated in the centre of the city.

Early registration ends on 17 August.

Visiting Familia Plómez in Madrid

July 9, 2018

While visiting the annual AEPM conference in Madrid I had made some time free to visit Familia Plómez which I knew a lot about but never got a chance to visit.
So I gladly accepted the invitation of Roberto Gamonal Arroyo to visit Familia Plómez , a cultural association whose objective is to preserve the printing presses and letterpress printing techniques. Familia Plómez is not a one-man show, it is a collective of more than 10 designers/printmakers who’s goal is to teach and foster the knowledge of typesetting, typography and whatever is related with the letter, printed, written or drawn. The collective of Familia Plómez primarily produces posters because it’s the most expressive form to show the visual power of typography.

Meet us at the Letterpress Corner!

March 7, 2018

In September last year, unexpected even for me, I decided to team up with Charlotte Van Lancker to set up a letterpress studio in Gent. Being a volunteer at the MIAT printing department for several years and taking part in Letterpress Workers event gave me a chance to learn the skill from fellow printmakers. Printmaking was always something I wished to keep myself busy with and opening up a studio with a fellow designer seemed like the perfect opportunity to me.

Trip to Amsterdam. Makers Match & GWA.

January 21, 2018

In December, between Christmas and New Year I decided to take a 3-day trip to Amsterdam to visit friends who came all the way from Toronto. Upon arrival to Amsterdam Central Station, I spotted a lovely and quiet place, situated in the Amstelpassage (inside the station) - called Lil' Amsterdam.
