"In celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the founding of the LGNE, the Letterpress Guild of New England (1982-2012), it was decided to mount an exhibition to educate, entertain, and inform the public. What better form than the letterpress poster and broadside, mediums which have always served that purpose."

Between writing and type: the stencil letter
Just spotted an interesting exhibition in Antwerp next week:
"An exhibition of stencil letters from the 18th century to the present day. Assembled by Eric Kindel and Fred Smeijers, the exhibition will feature a rich selection of stencil letters in the context of artefacts, documents and ephemera, including stencil plates and stencilling devices, specimens and catalogues, patent inventions and much more. A highlight of the exhibition will be a set of new stencil typefaces designed by Maurice Göldner, Pierre Pané-Fauré and Fred Smeijers. "

Wendingen. M-Museum Leuven
1921, cover design by El Lissitsky
Wendingen was an art magazine that appeared from 1918 to 1932. It was a monthly publication aimed at architects and interior designers. The chief editor was the architect H. Th. Wijdeveld. In spite of the link of Wendingen with an architect's association, the contents of the booklet were not limited to architecture but attention was also given to art and design. The magazine gained recognition not only through its content but also by its square format and the striking typography of architect H.Th. Wijdeveld, El Lissitzky, Vilmos Huszar and others.

I must admit I have a weakness for letterpress related films. And even though this subtile short film by Danny Cooke have been featured on the various blogs and was circulating on twitter the last few days I felt the urge to (re)post it as well. Well, because it can never be too much;)
"A short film about letterpress and one of the few remaining movable-type printing workshops in the UK, situated at Plymouth University, featuring Paul Collier."

"NEW YORK TYPES, running December 15, 2011 through January 6, 2012, is presented in collaboration with New York Writes Itself (NYWI), a new ongoing series of creative productions fueled by the people of New York, and Leo Burnett New York.
For the NEW YORK TYPES exhibition, each artist or group -- currently including Swayspace, Center for the Book Arts, The KDU, Peter Kruty Editions and Tarhorse Press -- has picked a collection of NYWI 'Script' entries to interpret in his or her own letterpress style, bringing the real words to life letter by letter. The artwork is for sale in limited editions of 10, with a total of 500 pieces for sale."
