Capturing the Music of Printmaking

August 8, 2017

Belgian printmaker David aka Dimitri Runkkari is creating fascinating letterpress printed LP record sleeves by using just brass rules, metal type, pieces of plastic and cork. David is one of the co-founders of Vlek, a music label from Brussels, and he’s the one who is responsible for the whole visual art direction of the label. Although you can listen to their music online they emphasize the importance of producing the physical releases.
"Having a physical object for each of our records acts like a business card – it’s a good way to get people’s attention" explains David. These are mostly limited edition runs, usually 300 copies, designed, letterpress or screen printed by David in-house.

Print Me Baby One More Type or LpW 2017

July 10, 2017

Just got back from Letterpress Workers Summit in Milan, 4 days filled with the joy of meeting like-minded people, learning from printmakers from all over the world, visiting museums and being genuinely inspired by what I saw. Even though this year I arrived one day later, missed the first day of the event and the 'Type and Ink' PechaKucha night, I've enjoyed every bit of it. The theme of this LpW edition was 'Resist', so each day the printmakers (approx. 40) divided into groups of 3 or 4 were producing some irresistible pieces of printwork using wood type and proof presses provided by Novepunti.

Type walk in Ghent. Before & after. Oudburg.
October 2, 2026

When walking through Oudburg in Ghent, which I do quite often, I have noticed a number of small changes over the years. Signs disappear. Façades are repainted. Businesses move on. New lettering takes their place.

None of these changes is particularly dramatic. But together they tell us something about how the visual identity of a street evolves.

Type Walk in Ghent. Before & After. Looking up: the fading letters of Cockney's Distillery.
July 5, 2026

A couple of weeks ago, during the annual flea market on Lange Violettestraat, I found myself doing what I probably do too often: looking up.

While most people were browsing records, ceramics and old books, my attention drifted towards the façades. That's when I noticed it. Barely visible beneath layers of age and weather, a painted sign slowly emerged from the brickwork.

Type walk in Ghent. Before & after. Marchandises & stories.
March 28, 2026

Tucked away near Sint-Jacobsplein in Ghent once stood a place that many locals still remember with a certain nostalgia: Marchand’10. The name Marchand’10 (Marchandise) — French for “merchant” — suited the place perfectly. This was never just a shop, but a world of its own. It felt more like wandering into a densely packed cabinet of curiosities.

Type walk in Ghent. Before & after or from lace to lunch: the changing story of Kraanlei 33.
January 6, 2026

It’s been quite a while since I started my Sunday type walks. What began as a simple stroll through the city—my only free day as a self-employed graphic designer—quickly became a way to move, clear my head, and indulge my long-standing fascination with typography in all its forms. Whenever I arrive in a new city, I instinctively take a type walk; the streets are full of hidden typographic gems, waiting to be discovered.
