A day in Venice

This year we — John Christopher (Flowers and Fleurons), Mark Pavey (Dead Methods), Graham Bignell and Beatrice Bless (New North Press), Christian Granados & me — decided to leave earlier for LpW 2015 and visit Tipoteca Italiana in Cornuda. We decided to meet in Venice and then travel to Cornuda by train the next day. Venice in the summer is very busy, but we’ve managed to escape the tourists spots, enjoy the city and have some local food.

Komitas Museum

A museum dedicated to the 19th – 20th-century Armenian composer Komitas was opened in January 2015. A rich collection of personal belongings of Komitas and rare documents, thoughtfully organized by young & talented director in exhibition that runs through 7 halls, makes it an absolutely must visit when you are in Armenia.

Each year when I’m in Yerevan I make sure I visit Matenadaran (The Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts).The Matenadaran is a major center with a unique and exceptionally rich manuscript collection, one that has become a symbol of Armenia. It is named after Mesrop Mashtots, who is credited with the creation of the Armenian alphabet in 405. In fact The Matenadaran is both, it is a museum of ancient manuscripts and a scientific research institute.

Yesterday I had a chance to visit a tiny museum in Brussels run by Henri Thomaes (82!). 20 years ago, the printer from Evere retired officially but he kept on going in his museum where time seems to have come to a standstill.

The work of designer and printmaker H.N.Werkman (1882-1945) is best known for his innovative printing techniques and experimental typography. Therefore seventy years after his death the city of Groningen organizes various exhibitions (10.04-01.11.2015) and presents a new publication about the artist - “Het boek H.N. Werkman. Leven en Werk” (in Dutch).

Type walk in Ghent. Before & after. Oudburg.

When walking through Oudburg in Ghent, which I do quite often, I have noticed a number of small changes over the years. Signs disappear. Façades are repainted. Businesses move on. New lettering takes their place.

None of these changes is particularly dramatic. But together they tell us something about how the visual identity of a street evolves.

Type Walk in Ghent. Before & After. Looking up: the fading letters of Cockney's Distillery.

A couple of weeks ago, during the annual flea market on Lange Violettestraat, I found myself doing what I probably do too often: looking up.

While most people were browsing records, ceramics and old books, my attention drifted towards the façades. That's when I noticed it. Barely visible beneath layers of age and weather, a painted sign slowly emerged from the brickwork.

Tucked away near Sint-Jacobsplein in Ghent once stood a place that many locals still remember with a certain nostalgia: Marchand’10. The name Marchand’10 (Marchandise) — French for “merchant” — suited the place perfectly. This was never just a shop, but a world of its own. It felt more like wandering into a densely packed cabinet of curiosities.

It’s been quite a while since I started my Sunday type walks. What began as a simple stroll through the city—my only free day as a self-employed graphic designer—quickly became a way to move, clear my head, and indulge my long-standing fascination with typography in all its forms. Whenever I arrive in a new city, I instinctively take a type walk; the streets are full of hidden typographic gems, waiting to be discovered.
