At the beginning of the year the MIAT museum announces the upcoming workshops which are traditionally held in the printing department of the MIAT museum. Time to make a new bookmark!
I decided to typeset it using wood and metal type even though I knew it might be more time-consuming! Of course, I could have designed it on the computer, make a polymer plate, but I thought it would be a shame to neglect such a beautiful collection of wood/metal type.
After a rough sketch and pulling the drawers of type in and out for about 3 hours I end up locking up four formes. Two formes for each side of the bookmark with an idea to print it in two colours.
When the typesetting was done, all mistakes were eliminated and I was sure nothing would fall off, the forme was ready to be printed. Luckily I got help from Arnould Poelman, a colleague volunteer with over 30 years of experience. He skillfully took care of the printing process on Heidelberg platen press (oh, I love the sound of it:)
After everything was perfectly dry we’ve faced a little problem - the historic gilliontine we have at the workshop is apparently not cutting straight, so we had a few mm difference between the first and the last sheet of paper. Using equipment from the previous century and expecting perfection was slightly overestimating :). But Arnould came up with an inventive solution of putting piece of cardboard of top the pages, so they wouldn’t move while cutting and we managed to get it straight!
